Resilient Infrastructure Operational Systems Analyst

LLNL•Livermore, CA
•$146,340 - $222,564•Hybrid

About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has multiple openings for Resilient Operational Infrastructure Systems Analysts in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate. The role supports analysis of the resilience of infrastructure systems to cyber, physical, and supply chain threats. Analysts apply technical expertise, critical thinking, modeling and simulation, and analysis to understand complex, multi-domain problems; provide decision insights and communicate options and trade-offs; and facilitate integration of new technology in support of customer missions. The position involves integrating across research and development teams and working directly with operational organizations. Positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level according to knowledge and related experience. Telework may be authorized at LLNL’s discretion based on policy, security, program, and performance requirements; it is not guaranteed and may change, including through onsite work requirements. The position is career indefinite and open to Laboratory employees and external candidates. Occasional travel may be required to support programmatic deliverables and sponsor or customer interactions.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship; the position also requires the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
  • Master’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, chemical, civil, or systems), computer sciences (data science or cybersecurity), operations research, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience designing, integrating, operating, or maintaining industrial control systems, or interpreting and analyzing their data, alarms, and trends.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience defining research questions and scoping defensible methods and approaches.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience with at least one computational discipline, such as risk analysis, decision analysis, data analytics, statistical modeling, modeling and simulation, control system design, systems engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate in a team, present and explain technical information, and document work.
  • Proficient analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to travel off-site for sponsor and customer interactions.
  • At SES.3: Advanced knowledge in infrastructure systems, energy systems, cybersecurity, physical security, operation of these systems, or related disciplines.
  • At SES.3: Advanced knowledge in applying and developing one or more of risk analysis, systems analysis, decision analysis, data analytics, statistical modeling, modeling and simulation, control system design or operation, systems engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At SES.3: Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • At SES.3: Advanced experience leading diverse technical teams to execute projects.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, chemical, civil, or systems), computer sciences (data science or cybersecurity), operations research, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with cybersecurity principles and practices, including cyber threat modeling and cyber risk analysis, SCADA systems, industrial control systems, or operational technology environments.
  • Experience developing models or frameworks to characterize and assess complex infrastructure systems, such as electricity grids and energy systems, supply chains and logistics, chemical processing, oil and natural gas, water, transportation, or communications networks, and/or threats and risks to these systems.
  • Broad experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience building models and running simulations using one or more of Python, Simulink, R, MATLAB, Java, or C++.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to analytical models, tools, and frameworks that characterize and assess infrastructure-resilience issues, including infrastructure interdependencies, system-level impacts from intelligent adversary attacks, and risks and cost-benefit of technology or operational solutions.
  • Help develop well-defined analytical questions and plans that provide decision insights to stakeholders facing complex, challenging, and ambiguous infrastructure-resilience problems.
  • Participate in, collaborate on, and contribute to physical and computational simulations of complex infrastructure systems.
  • Develop innovative methods drawing on disciplines such as operational technology security, systems engineering, decision analysis, risk analysis, applied statistics and optimization, super intelligence and machine learning, and related fields.
  • Collaborate with scientists and researchers across disciplines including cybersecurity, physical security, natural hazards, and infrastructure systems.
  • Contribute to technical projects and organizational objectives; work with team members on deliverables and communicate status and projected delivery dates to support quality work delivered on schedule.
  • Routinely interact with technical contacts at sponsor and partner organizations.
  • Travel occasionally to support programmatic deliverables, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • At SES.3: Lead technical tasks while balancing customer and partner priorities to meet deadlines.
  • At SES.3: Work independently and with team members to operationalize research and development advancements for LLNL national security programs.
