The Residential Officer works at the Iowa Department of Corrections’ 24-hour community-based corrections facility, providing direct services through high-contact interactions with clients. The role supports clients’ successful reentry into society by encouraging pro-social behavior and helping facilitate programming intended to support positive change and increase community safety. The officer works independently when appropriate and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to observe and assess client behaviors and interactions. The role includes facility security checks and searches, transporting clients within the community, and using behavior-change approaches such as cognitive behavioral strategies and core correctional practices. The officer supports case managers and clients in pursuing goals while considering individual needs, disabilities, trauma, and cultural responsiveness. The officer must respond to critical situations, use appropriate defensive tactics and life-saving measures, and help resolve behavioral violations, community-safety concerns, and other critical issues while remaining composed and objective. This position is located at the Residential Treatment Facility in Sioux City, Iowa, and is a 40-hours-per-week float shift. The officer will often cover shifts at either the North or South Facility at the same location. Employees must satisfactorily complete a background investigation, including a criminal history check; possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license, unless accommodated under the Americans with Disabilities Act; follow universal precautions to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens; and become certified in First Aid and CPR.
