About The Position

Under the supervision of the Manager of Residential Life, the Resident Office Assistant (RA) assists with the supervision of students and the management of the Student Residence. This role serves "in-loco parentis" for students, responding to emergencies, reinforcing guidelines, and supervising student participation in activities and daily routines. The RA also assists with facility systems, administrative tasks, and fostering a harmonious community. This is a part-time, hourly position averaging 2-3 days per week, primarily with evening shifts.

Requirements

  • AA degree/2 or more years of college preferred; high school diploma or equivalent is acceptable.
  • Summer camp counselor, youth development assistant, university residence life staff, or RA experience working with adolescents in a residential setting preferred.
  • Effectively supervises students to ensure their safety.
  • Effectively prioritize work to reflect the needs of the students and facility.
  • Communicates with others (both orally and in writing) in a manner that ensures clear and mutual understanding of information.
  • Understands and differentiates levels of confidentiality.
  • Faces difficult situations with tenacity and supports students and staff.
  • Actively listens to students and family concerns and problems and reports concerns and problems to school administration as appropriate.
  • Helps to identify appropriate solutions.
  • Follows up to ensure positive outcomes.
  • Maintains documentation and files that are readily accessible and understandable by others.
  • Demonstrates diplomacy and tact in all interactions.
  • Applies creativity and innovation to work processes.

  • Ability to understand, follow, and enforce SFBS and SFCM/Bowes Center emergency and safety guidelines.
  • Must be able to physically assist an injured student which may include lifting the individual and supporting their weight with your shoulders.
  • Must be able lift boxes of supplies weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb/descend stairs.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Fire extinguisher certification.
  • Employment subject to a successful FBI and CA DOJ background check and fingerprinting.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as "in-loco parentis" for students living in the facility and respond to emergencies (fire, medical, earthquake, etc.).
  • Reinforce compliance with fire, safety, security, and curfew guidelines and procedures.
  • Supervise students for scheduled, urgent, and emergency doctor’s appointments in consultation with School administration.
  • Assist in the cleanliness and upkeep of the office unit.
  • Oversee and assure student timely participation in events, activities, bed-check, curfew, and housekeeping assignments.
  • Assist the Manager of Residential Life with facility systems, including room assignments, key issuance, common spaces, storage areas, and the laundry room.
  • Assist with administrative assignments and preparation of rooms for the school year program and summer session.
  • Build rapport with students, help implement social events, and facilitate healthy exchanges to create a harmonious community.
  • Apply fair and consistent disciplinary standards for all dormitory students.
  • Refer all major disciplinary offenses to the Senior Manager of Residential Life.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
