About The Position

The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) is an essential live-in staff member of the Islander Housing team, responsible for contributing to student learning, growth, and success through intentional residential experiences. The RLC will have frequent and meaningful interactions with students, assist in administering various aspects of the residential experience within their assigned area, and may oversee an area of up to 1,200 students. This role involves selection, training, mentoring, supervision, and evaluation of Resident Assistants (RAs), leading departmental planning committees, assisting with move-in/out processes, and participating in an on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field.
  • One (1) year of related experience in housing/residence life.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Teams and Outlook).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other departments and stakeholders, and to build positive relationships with students, parents, staff, faculty, and community partners.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to inspire and motivate student staff members.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals from various backgrounds and communication styles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to housing and residence life, as well as industry best practices.
  • Ability to work on an on-call schedule and travel between campus locations on short notice.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision (40%): Aid in the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of Resident Assistants (RAs). Conduct weekly staff meetings and bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with RAs. Provide formal and informal evaluations and feedback. Read and document RA weekly reports and disseminate pertinent information. Develop and facilitate recognition initiatives for student staff.
  • Community Management (40%): Maintain visibility and engage with residents about their academic, personal, and community successes, issues, and concerns. Assist with planning and implementing customer service and student retention initiatives. Address student mental health and roommate concerns with care and compassion. Act as a referral agent to connect students with campus and community resources. Enforce the Student Conduct of Conduct, Resident Handbook, and relevant laws.
  • Departmental and Institutional Collaboration (10%): Cooperate with other staff members and departments to foster strong partnerships. Plan and execute programming initiatives with campus partners to support student engagement. Support operations staff with hall openings and closings, including check-in/out, breaks, and holidays. Serve on departmental and campus committees. Support and administer approved departmental and divisional assessment programs.
  • Safety and Security (10%): Assist with facilities management through safety inspections, fire drills, walk-throughs, and work order submission. Collaborate with University Police Department, Counseling Center, and other departments for incident response. Act as a Mandatory Reporter as required by the Clery Act. Serve in the on-call rotation with other professional staff members.
