About The Position

Provides certified law enforcement duties for an assigned school campus within the City of Largo. The work includes but is not limited to, campus patrol, crime prevention, crime detection and investigations, and traffic control. The Reserve School Resource Officer (RSRO) program is a community-based, collaborative school policing and law enforcement initiative that provides school campuses with professionals who serve as role models. The RSRO holds the same level of authority and responsibility imparted upon the full-time Law Enforcement Officer, including arrest powers. RSRO authority and responsibility may be limited by Largo Police Department policy and procedure. Work is performed under the direction of a Police Sergeant. The RSRO will be tasked with the general safety of their assigned school with minimal supervision and with considerable latitude in using initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures. The RSRO may be assigned shifts at more than one school during the year based on department needs. The RSRO schedule will run concurrently with the student school schedule at the school to which the officer is assigned. This may include hours for activities outside the school's standard school schedule hours.

Requirements

  • Eligible for the State of Florida Law Enforcement Certificate issued by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) at the time of application or current Florida Law Enforcement Officer with firearms certification.
  • Five (5) years of experience with a Florida Law Enforcement Agency.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Sixty (60) semester credit hours from an accredited college or university (the 60 credit hours will be waived for applicants with at least two years prior law enforcement-related experience or two years active military duty).
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Comply with Police Department and City policies regarding Tattoo Policy: Largo Police Department policy states officers may not have tattoos below the wrist or above the collar. If you cannot comply with the location of tattoos, you must be willing to have your tattoos removed prior to entering the Field Training Program. Tattoos located on an Officer's legs will be permitted while the officer is in the bicycle uniform, provided they meet the standards imposed by the Chief. No inappropriate or offensive tattoos will be allowed.
  • Facial Hair: Facial hair is allowed.
  • Piercing Policy: Visible body piercings are prohibited other than standard ear piercings. Both males and females may wear stud earrings.
  • Ability to understand the principles and practices of police work.
  • Ability to understand and enforce laws and ordinances analytically and objectively.
  • Ability to observe situations and to report and record them clearly and completely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
  • Meet the minimum standards for employment as a Police Officer established by Florida Statute 943.13.
  • Meet background and personal history standards as established by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC).
  • Operate video recording devices and mobile computing devices.
  • Proficiency with standard police equipment and firearms.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment criminal background check, drug testing, physical examination, and psychological evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or in police vehicles; enforces traffic and criminal laws, parking regulations, and domestic violence injunctions; performs investigations, provides service, and generally provides for the safety of the public.
  • Responds to the scene of crimes, traffic accidents, and incidents on school property; interviews suspects, prisoners, and complainants.
  • Attends training for the City when necessary.
  • Maintains radio contact with department personnel via two-way radio.
  • Searches for and apprehends suspects involved in criminal activity.
  • Transports prisoners to the police building, detention facility, or treatment facility as required.
  • Testifies and presents evidence in court regarding policing duties.
  • Interacts with diverse groups of people within the department and the community to detect, prevent, and investigate suspected criminal activity.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents; responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.
  • Assists medical personnel on site; assists other agencies as required.
  • May be assigned special law enforcement-related duties.
