About The Position

This role involves assisting with research and data compilation for the Economic Development & Culture division. The trainee will support various economic development initiatives by collecting, researching, and organizing data related to municipal policies, industrial sectors, and government programs. The position requires interaction with the public, data entry, and general office support. This is a full-time, temporary (4-month) position with two vacancies, one at City Hall and one at the Scarborough Civic Centre.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma program in data management, information studies, business administration, economics, public administration, public policy, international relations, and/or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook).
  • Experience conducting research and analysis.
  • Strong problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work in a demanding environment with many competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as cooperatively as a member.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of data systems or databases would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of CRMs and GISs would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of international trade agreements and municipal policy jurisdictions would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with assembling and compiling information/survey packages.
  • Collects data by distributing questionnaires, visiting sites, going door to door, asking participants/groups for information/opinions etc.
  • Researches data including municipal policies related to key industrial sectors in competing jurisdictions
  • Travels to various locations and/or attends special events to provide support/on-site assistance and distribute information.
  • Assists with packing, loading, lifting, moving, delivering and unpacking supplies, displays etc.
  • Documents findings related to employment sites and industrial commercial development opportunities. Inputs/retrieves/updates/maintains data.
  • Assists with organizing and presenting data collected.
  • Assists with compiling and consolidation of data regarding government programs, services, and tools supporting international trade and business development, for others to analyze/process.
  • Assists others with drafting documents, bulletins etc. and data analysis, including developing corporate profiles of key companies based on publicly-available information.
  • Assists in maintaining data/statistics.
  • Assists with various office functions.
  • Answers calls, provides general information, takes messages and directs inquiries to appropriate staff to answer questions/handle requests.
