About The Position

This is a temporary extra help position to assist with research in the Kaur lab. The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is a major research university and one of the largest employers in Chicago. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biological, chemical, or medical sciences (such as biology, pharmacology/toxicology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, physiology, or medical technology), or a closely related field.
  • One (1) year (12 months) of experience comparable to that gained as a Research Technologist I.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s Degree in biological, chemical, or medical sciences (such as biology, pharmacology/toxicology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, physiology, or medical technology) or a closely related field may be substituted for 1 and 2 above.

Responsibilities

  • Rear and maintain model organisms (e.g., Drosophila colonies, and microbial cultures) under established laboratory protocols.
  • Prepare fly food, reagents, buffers, and growth media required for daily lab operations.
  • Support experimental workflows by setting up assays, collecting samples, and recording experimental observations.
  • Perform and assist with routine molecular biology experiments including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, library prep, sequencing, data analysis, and other downstream molecular analyses.
  • Perform data entry, data analysis, and figure preparation in a timely manner.
  • Organize and manage biological samples, including labeling, storage, and tracking.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records in electronic or physical lab notebooks.
  • Assist with routine laboratory maintenance, including equipment calibration, cleaning, restocking laboratory supplies, and inventory management.
  • Follow institutional biosafety, chemical safety, and laboratory compliance procedures.
  • Support senior research personnel with ongoing research projects.
  • Participate in literature reading, journal club presentations, weekly/biweekly meetings with the PI.
  • Contribute to manuscript writing.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
