About The Position

The research specialist will lead field sampling efforts on research dealing with greenhouse gas dynamics and nitrogen cycling in lakes and streams of southern Wisconsin. This position also provides an opportunity to undertake an individual project directly related to the goals of the research project. This individual will supervise 2-3 undergraduate assistants, interact with PI’s, assist graduate students, be engaged in project research activities, and participate in Center-wide activities at the Hasler Lab of Limnology.

Requirements

  • Field work experience including operating small watercraft, dissolved gas and water sampling, stream habitat characterization, use and calibration of multi-probe automated and hand-held sensors
  • Lab experience including use of nutrient autoanalyzer, manual and automated analyses of all inorganic nitrogen fractions, calculations associated with quantifying dissolved gas concentrations and saturation, and use of R programming language for data analysis, and data management.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative
  • Ability to work in a research environment
  • Experience supervising undergraduates
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with sampling, and familiarity with Wisconsin lakes and streams is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area.
  • Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • Performs literature reviews and writes reports
  • Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s).
  • Collects data and monitors test results
  • Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials

Benefits

  • The expected salary range for this position is $44,543 up to $56,570 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay within this range will depend on experience and qualifications.
