About The Position

Meta’s Robotics Hardware team is seeking a Research Scientist Intern focused on developing high-performance custom robotics hardware. The role is part of a hardware research team responsible for consumer humanoid development. The intern will help invent and develop technologies for future intelligent robots and advanced AI models, working across robotics hardware and related disciplines. Internships last 12 to 24 weeks, with various start dates throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Currently have or be in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a relevant technical field.
  • Obtain work authorization in the country of employment by the time of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Have hands-on experience designing, bringing up, and iterating real robotic hardware systems using a first-principles-driven approach.
  • Have basic experience across multiple relevant domains, such as electromagnetic simulation, actuator specification and design, hardware design, prototyping and manufacturing, tactile sensing, low-level motor control, or high-level controls/autonomy (model- or learning-based).
  • Have experience with Python, C++, C, MATLAB, or a related language.

Nice To Haves

  • Intent to return to a degree program after completing the internship or co-op.
  • Deep experience in at least one relevant domain, such as electromagnetic simulation, actuator specification and design, hardware design, prototyping and manufacturing, tactile sensing, low-level motor control, or high-level controls/autonomy (model- or learning-based).
  • A proven track record of significant results, demonstrated through grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as ICRA, IROS, RSS, CoRL, or similar.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, bring up, and test advanced robotic systems, including hardware and software, from scratch.
  • Advance rapid prototyping of new concepts and provide creative solutions to robotics hardware development challenges, considering both theory and physical embodiment.
  • Support characterization and validation to mature critical components for Meta’s robotics product development.
  • Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and cross-functional partners on full-stack system development.
