Research Intern, Audio Hardware (PhD)

Meta•Redmond, WA
•$7,313 - $12,667

About The Position

The Meta Reality Labs Research Audio team works to create virtual sounds that are perceptually indistinguishable from reality and redefine human hearing. The Devices and Hardware Research team seeks PhD student interns to work in areas including wearable electrophysiological and biosignal sensing, low-power and energy-autonomous wearable design, embedded real-time signal processing, hearing biomechanics, and conventional and machine-learning-based signal processing. The intern will design and prototype wearable sensing hardware and form factors, develop and run participant data-capture studies, create real-time sensor-processing algorithms, demonstrate proof-of-concept technologies, collaborate with researchers and cross-functional partners, and communicate research plans and results. The internship lasts 12 to 24 weeks, with various start dates throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD in Acoustics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • At least 2 years of independent research experience, evidenced by publications and/or conference presentations.
  • At least 2 years of experience with computer-aided design, acoustic simulation tools, or programming languages such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment by the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
  • Intends to return to a full-time degree program after completing the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • Track record of significant results demonstrated through grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications in leading journals or conferences.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Intent to return to a degree program after completing the internship/co-op.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype novel wearable form factors and sensing hardware for on-body biosignal acquisition, including electrode/transducer placement, mechanical and electrical integration, and ultra-low-power or self-powered architectures.
  • Build and run wearable data-capture setups, instrument prototypes, define and execute data-collection protocols with human participants, and assess signal quality, repeatability, and artifact robustness across sessions and users.
  • Design and implement novel algorithms to collect and process data from different sensors in real time.
  • Deliver proof-of-concept demonstrations of developed technologies to researchers and other cross-functional partners.
  • Work closely with researchers on innovative project proposals, timelines, and milestones.
  • Communicate research plans, progress, and results.
