About The Position

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) is seeking a Research Laboratory Operations Administrator to oversee the operational needs of its basic science research laboratories. This role is crucial for ensuring that lab infrastructure runs efficiently, safely, and in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. The administrator will manage equipment lifecycle, coordinate lab space transitions (moves, closures, new researcher onboarding), and ensure adherence to safety and compliance regulations. This position involves close collaboration with Principal Investigators (PIs), research administrative staff, Facilities, Tufts Technology Services, and external vendors. While primarily supporting TUSDM, the role will also extend support to research laboratories within the Tufts University School of Medicine. The position requires a 50/50 split of seated and standing work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a science-related field.
  • 2-4 years of experience in a laboratory, research, or operations environment.
  • Excellent organizational, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage vendors, faculty, and administrative partners.
  • Ability to complete all required background checks at the time of hire, promotion, or transfer.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with lab management or inventory systems.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards (e.g., OSHA, biosafety).

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the full life cycle of research laboratory equipment, including coordination for installations, calibration, repairs, and preventative maintenance.
  • Create and maintain equipment logs, service records, and warranties to plan for life cycle and replacement.
  • Develop processes for equipment support in collaboration with laboratory staff.
  • Budget for equipment repairs and replacements in coordination with the budget team and procurement.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for laboratory space transitions, including closures, moves, and onboarding of new researchers.
  • Manage lab setup, equipment readiness, and the decommissioning and re-assignment of lab space and equipment.
  • Partner with Facilities and external vendors to address infrastructure and maintenance needs.
  • Ensure research laboratory operations adhere to school, state, and federal safety compliance standards in partnership with environmental health & safety.
  • Assist in maintaining safety documentation, chemical inventories, and other safety requirements.
  • Assist in laboratory inspections and management of follow-up inspection tasks.
  • Provide general administrative support to the TUSDM Operations team and may assist in clinical, educational, or other school projects.
  • Collaborate closely with PIs, Research Administration Staff, Facilities, and Tufts Technology Services to advance the school's mission.
