Research Intern - Algorithms Group: Theory

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Algorithms group at Microsoft Research (MSR) Redmond seeks doctoral students to work on theoretical computer science, especially algorithms for approximate nearest neighbor search, erasure coding for distributed storage, and theoretical aspects of Large Language Models. The group values fundamental theoretical advances and supports interns in connecting theoretical work to practical challenges and real-world impact. Its research has appeared in leading venues including STOC, FOCS, SODA, NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR. During the 12-week internship, interns are paired with mentors and collaborate with other interns and researchers, present their findings, and participate in the research community. Internships are offered year-round and typically begin in the summer. Interns are expected to be physically located at their manager’s Microsoft worksite for the duration of the internship. Applicants must submit at least two reference letters, a cover letter, and relevant work or research samples. Applications and offers are processed on an ongoing basis throughout the academic calendar (September–April). For fullest consideration, apply by January 1, 2027; the position will remain open for at least five days and applications are accepted until it is filled.
