Research Intern - Algorithms Group: Theory

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$6,810 - $14,610•Onsite

About The Position

Microsoft Research’s Algorithms group in Redmond is seeking doctoral students for theoretical computer science research, particularly algorithms for approximate nearest neighbor search, erasure coding for distributed storage, and theoretical aspects of large language models. The group values fundamental theoretical advances and supports interns in connecting their theoretical work to practical challenges and real-world impact. Its research has appeared in venues including STOC, FOCS, SODA, NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR. The 12-week internship pairs interns with mentors. Interns collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the research community. Research internships are available year-round, though they typically begin in summer. Interns are expected to work physically at their manager’s Microsoft worksite for the duration of the internship. For fullest consideration, apply by January 1, 2027. Applications are processed on an ongoing basis during the academic calendar (September–April), and the position will remain open for at least five days and accept applications until filled. The base pay range is USD $6,810–$13,480 per month, with a different range for certain locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area: USD $8,920–$14,610 per month. Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation; additional information is available on Microsoft’s careers website. Applicants must submit a cover letter and relevant work or research samples, as well as at least two reference letters. Reference letters may be requested after the application is submitted, though they are not automatically requested for all candidates.
