Research Intern - Algorithms Group: Generative Modeling

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$5,690 - $14,610•Onsite

About The Position

The Algorithms group at Microsoft Research (MSR) Redmond is seeking Research Interns to advance research in generative modeling. Work may involve fundamental algorithmic innovations that improve the efficiency and generation quality of existing models, such as diffusion models, image auto-regressive models, and language models, as well as designing next-generation generative modeling techniques. The group’s research includes work on latent zoning networks, one-step sampling of image auto-regressive models, weak-to-strong on-policy distillation, and LLM reasoning. Its research and internships contribute to work published at venues including NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR. The 12-week internship pairs interns with mentors. Interns collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, contribute to the research community, and gain experience working alongside doctoral candidates and researchers. Research internships are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer. Interns are expected to be physically located at their manager’s Microsoft worksite for the duration of the internship. For fullest consideration, apply by January 1, 2027; applications and offers are processed on an ongoing basis during the academic calendar, and the position remains open until filled, subject to a minimum five-day posting period.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a master's degree program in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Physically located at the manager’s Microsoft worksite for the duration of the internship.
  • Submit at least two reference letters, a cover letter, and relevant work or research samples.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled in a doctorate degree program in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Publications at top theoretical computer science or machine learning conferences, such as NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR, or in top journals.
  • Familiarity with frameworks such as PyTorch.
  • Experience training large foundation models, such as diffusion models, image auto-regressive models, and large language models.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in generative modeling, including algorithmic improvements to existing models or development of new generative modeling techniques.
  • Collaborate with an assigned mentor, other Research Interns, and researchers.
  • Present research findings.
  • Contribute to the research community and its activities.

Benefits

  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation; further benefits and pay information is available through Microsoft Careers.
