The Machine Learning and Optimization (MLO) group at Microsoft Research in Redmond conducts research at the intersection of optimization, machine learning, and systems, with a focus on combining machine learning with optimization for efficient decision-making. Example research areas include training large language models for algorithm design, accelerating optimization algorithms for interactive decision dialogues, and developing algorithms for end-to-end supply chain management. The group draws on theoretical insights to design algorithms and machine learning solutions that operate efficiently at scale. The 12-week research internship pairs interns with mentors and brings them together with doctoral candidates and researchers to collaborate, present findings, and participate in the research community. Interns design and prototype algorithms or models, conduct experiments, analyze results, document ideas, and may contribute to a research paper when results are suitable. Interns are encouraged to take initiative and suggest further research directions. Interns must be physically located at their manager’s Microsoft worksite for the duration of the internship. Research internships are offered year-round and typically begin in the summer.
