The Machine Learning and Optimization (MLO) group at Microsoft Research in Redmond researches the intersection of optimization, machine learning, and systems, with a focus on combining machine learning technology and optimization for efficient decision-making. Example projects include training large language models for algorithm design, accelerating optimization algorithms for interactive decision dialogues, and developing novel algorithms for end-to-end supply chain management. The group also uses theoretical insights to design algorithms and machine learning solutions that operate efficiently at scale. During the 12-week internship, interns are paired with mentors and collaborate with other interns and researchers. They present findings and contribute to the research community. Interns design algorithms and models and prototype them, conduct experiments, analyze results, document ideas, and may contribute to a paper when results are suitable. They are encouraged to show initiative and suggest further research directions. Interns must be physically located at their manager’s Microsoft worksite for the duration of the internship.
