About The Position

The Human and Object Understanding team (HOUr) in Apple’s Intelligent System Experience organization is seeking Research Engineers with a strong foundation in machine learning and computer vision to develop next-generation multimodal human-sensing technologies. The role is part of an applied research organization building foundation models for facial and full-body perception and developing machine learning technology for features across Apple platforms, including Apple Intelligence, Camera, Photos, and Visual Intelligence. The Machine Learning Research Engineer designs and develops AI/ML models for human sensing, with a focus on robust cross-domain identity recognition. Multimodal human sensing enables experiences based on human traits such as identity, expression, clothing, action, gesture, gaze, and human-object interaction. These capabilities support experiences including personalized Natural Language Search, Memories Creation, personalized Image Generation, Cinematic mode, Photographic Styles, Center Stage, and human-device interactions through DockKit.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience in computer vision and machine learning research and development.
  • Demonstrated experience training, fine-tuning, and evaluating deep learning models for vision tasks using modern ML architectures.
  • Evidence of research and innovation through publications in top-tier journals or conferences, patents, or impactful software developments.
  • Proficiency in Python and PyTorch or equivalent deep learning frameworks.

Nice To Haves

  • Expert-level knowledge of state-of-the-art methods in face recognition, facial analysis, or biometric systems.
  • Hands-on experience training and scaling multimodal large language models or large-scale vision-language models.
  • Experience with on-device machine learning, model optimization such as knowledge distillation, quantization, or pruning, or production-grade ML pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop AI/ML models for human sensing, focusing on robust cross-domain identity recognition systems.
  • Develop foundation models for facial and full-body perception.
  • Work on machine learning for multimodal human sensing, including representations of identity, expression, clothing, action, gesture, gaze, and human-object interaction.
