Andreessen Horowitz’s Frontier research lab is a multidisciplinary research group connecting academic theory with industry practice. The lab works across emerging technology areas, including AI-enabled applications and developments in materials, energy, and hardware, in addition to crypto-focused research. It conducts fundamental research and collaborates with portfolio companies on technical and conceptual challenges. Interns learn from and work with the firm’s investment and engineering teams. The role is intended for students with strong technical backgrounds and interest in emerging technologies. Research interests may include AI and machine learning, agentic commerce, cryptography, security, distributed computing, hardware design, economics, energy, material science, biology, incentives, quantitative finance, market and mechanism design, computing foundations, and pure mathematics. Applicants from other backgrounds are also encouraged to apply. A typical schedule allocates approximately two-thirds of the intern’s time to their own research, often in collaboration with lab members and visitors, and one-third to portfolio-related problems. Interns are expected to be in person in New York City and will have access to, and typically make heavy use of, current AI tools. The internship runs from June 1, 2027, through August 20, 2027, with a residency of 10 to 12 weeks. The anticipated weekly rate depends on the current degree program: PhD students receive $4,500 per week plus a $500 weekly housing stipend; master’s students receive $4,000 per week plus a $500 weekly housing stipend; and undergraduate students receive $3,500 per week plus a $500 weekly housing stipend. Starting pay may vary based on factors including experience, skills, and scope.
