About The Position

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Ability to learn to conduct historical research with archival materials and published scholarly secondary sources.
Ability to learn to manage organizing and translating historic Hawaiian language documents.
Ability to learn to analyze historical data and produce public-facing communications (including but not limited to writing, graphs, timelines or other data visualizations) to engage the public.
Ability to respectfully engage with community members who have relevant experience related to the histories being studied.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Nice To Haves

Advanced knowledge of Hawaiian history (preferably demonstrated prior course work)

Responsibilities

Provides research assistance to Dr. Maile Arvin's community-engaged history project, Na Lei Poina 'Ole (Beloved Children Never Forgotten), about the history of reformatories and industrial schools in Hawai'i.
Conducts archival research and oral history interviews, as needed.
Analyzes and reflects on the historical data.
Writes about these histories for both public and academic audiences.
Other duties as assigned.
