About The Position

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees. The Associate Volleyball Coach is the Chief Assistant to the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach. Coach will assist with all aspects of NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Program, including student recruitment and development, on court coaching, contest scheduling, compliance with NCAA, Conference and University of Hawai‘i rules and regulations, student-athlete academic achievement, and other duties assigned by the Head Coach.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university
  • Two (2) years of experience coaching volleyball at the college or university level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Knowledge of volleyball as competed at the collegiate level.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Ability to work outside normally scheduled work hours including day, night, weekend and /or holiday hours as directed.
  • Ability to travel with the team as required.
  • Ability to work with all segments of the University of Hawai'i community and general public.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
  • Required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification by the employment start date.
  • Computer, cell phone, and social media technology competency.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in organizing and participating in practices and intercollegiate competitions.
  • Teaches necessary skills from the basic fundamentals to the techniques and strategies of team play.
  • Promotes and fosters a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members.
  • Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the court.
  • Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority.
  • Assists with evaluating, recruiting and selecting qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically.
  • Actively seeks out and encourages a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process.
  • Works collaboratively with the staff of the Compliance, Student Affairs, Academics and the Admissions Offices to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Makes recurring contacts by phone, writes correspondence, conducts off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits as assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Assists with overseeing the academic progress and success of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation.
  • Assists the Head Coach in scheduling of contests and opponents, and makes arrangements for the contests as assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Works with the Head Coach to plan and administer team travel arrangements to include transportation, meals and lodging.
  • Assists the Head Coach in scouting or opponents including the exchange and analysis of videotapes.
  • Assists the Head Coach in organizing and participating in sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps, as approved.
  • Actively participates in fundraising, promotional, and public relation activities for the sports program.
  • In the absence of the Head Coach, assumes the duties, responsibilities and authority of the Head Coach for the operations and administration of the Program.
  • Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the sports program.
  • Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  • Knows, recognizes, and complies with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawai‘i and its employees, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and of the affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.
  • Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there are reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
