About The Position

The Graduate Research Assistant will support the Institute of the Environment in three key areas: (1) leading the organization of the Institute’s bimonthly Seminar Series and Workshop Series; (2) preparing and disseminating the Institute's new quarterly newsletter; and (3) fostering a collaborative research environment for students and faculty.

Requirements

  • Current PhD student (2nd year or above) in the Institute of the Environment doctoral program.
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in event organization, academic community-building, or faculty engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Priority will be granted to candidates to whom the University has a financial obligation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the organization of the Institute of Environment's bimonthly Seminar Series and Workshop Series.
  • Solicit speakers and presenters representing a mix of PhD students, University of Ottawa scholars, external academics, and practitioners from government, NGOs, and the private sector.
  • Ensure seminar and workshop topics reflect student interests.
  • Manage logistics for in-person, hybrid, and remote seminars and workshops, including set-up, invitations, technology coordination, and moderation where appropriate.
  • Promote seminars and workshops through Institute communication channels and liaise with administrators to publicize events on the Institute’s website.
  • Coordinate the Institute of Environment's new quarterly newsletter.
  • Solicit key newsletter content from students, faculty affiliates, administrators.
  • Prepare and disseminate the newsletter to all members of the Institute community.
  • Assist in creating and sustaining a collaborative research environment within the Institute of the Environment.
  • Encourage collegial gatherings and informal exchanges among students and faculty.
  • Support research networking activities and initiatives that strengthen collaboration.
  • Work with the Director of Graduate Programs to foster an active network of Environmental Studies and Environmental Science scholars at the University of Ottawa.
  • Support information dissemination efforts, including maintaining and updating materials such as the Institute’s website and communication channels.
  • Provide support for additional initiatives that enhance research culture and visibility at the Institute.
