This position is responsible for a variety of complex coding, estimation, and data summary procedures for the Statewide Harvest Survey (Alaska Sport Fishing Survey). This annual survey of resident and non-resident anglers is used to estimate the total catch, harvest, and participation in every sport fishery in Alaska. The information collected is central to the department’s management of sport and some commercial fisheries, economic studies, international management of fisheries for Pacific halibut, and meeting Alaska’s obligations in the Pacific Salmon Treaty. The role involves developing and maintaining databases, spreadsheets, procedures, and SAS programs; reviewing and preparing survey data; performing consistency checks and resolving errors; calculating estimates and confidence intervals; coordinating review of preliminary estimates; preparing summary reports; and responding to ad-hoc data requests.
