About The Position

The BYU Department of Ancient Scripture is dedicated to furthering the Aims of a BYU education, which provide students with an education that is spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, character building, and leads to lifelong learning and service. The Department seeks to hire individuals who have demonstrated the ability to provide this type of education through the highest quality teaching, citizenship, and scholarship. Candidates must be familiar with, support, and strive to fulfill the principles and direction contained in Strengthening Religious Education in Institutions of Higher Education.

Requirements

  • PhD in Hebrew Bible, New Testament, ANES, Education, or closely related field from an accredited university, completed by the start date.
  • Unusual potential for excellent teaching of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, in particular courses on the Book of Mormon and the Bible, to undergraduate students at BYU.
  • Personal character, faith, testimony, and qualities of life to serve as powerful role models for students.
  • Familiarity with, support of, and striving to fulfill the principles and direction contained in Strengthening Religious Education in Institutions of Higher Education.
  • Ability to abide by the university's Honor Code and dress and grooming standards.
  • Successful candidates are expected to support and contribute to the academic and religious missions of the university within the context of the principles and doctrine of the affiliated church.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience in religious education in the Church Educational System (CES).
  • Familiarity with all of the standard works and the teachings of modern apostles and prophets.
  • Solid foundation in the doctrines of the restored gospel.
  • Experience in and commitment to mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Members in good standing of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Responsibilities

  • Teach six sections (two credits each) of classes offered by the Department of Ancient Scripture each fall/winter semester, normally consisting of two different class preps.
  • Teach three sections (two credits each) of classes offered by the Department of Ancient Scripture during either spring or summer term (normally consisting of one class prep).
  • Be a good citizen in the Department of Ancient Scripture, the college (BYU Religious Education), and the university levels, including attending meetings and fulfilling committee obligations.
  • Produce gospel-related creative works or publications (optional).
