About The Position
Petco Veterinary Services is hiring a relief veterinarian to work in either Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. They are primarily located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, using equipment such as digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital staff are licensed and trained, and shifts do not involve overnight or emergency on-call duties. Relief veterinarians can select shifts through flexible online scheduling, with no minimum or maximum shift requirement and weekday and weekend hours available. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and do not pay agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow and supports on-time departures, while trained staff handle operations so veterinarians can focus on care. The role also includes access to a monthly clinic newsletter and a 15% discount on Petco products and services. New Jersey state bid rates average $136–$170 per hour; actual rates may vary by clinic location and shift duration.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a state license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- At vaccination clinic shifts, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
- At full-service hospital shifts, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
- Perform the functions of the shift in accordance with applicable state-specific licensing and local, state, and federal requirements.
