About The Position

Northrop Grumman's Space Systems Sector is seeking a Reliability Systems Engineer – Level 2 to join their team in Redondo Beach, CA. This position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining associated business and/or customer funding, as well as obtaining final clearances and program access(es) within a reasonable period of time. Continued employment is subject to maintaining the required clearance and program access. The role involves performing various reliability-related tasks to support the design team, including design tradeoffs, reliability predictions/assessments, de-rating analysis, allocation of reliability requirements, failure rate estimation, facilitation of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), critical items identification, documentation of controls/mitigations, and support for design reviews and failure investigations. The engineer will create reliability block diagrams/models, develop technical solutions for reliability and availability issues, and apply probability and statistical tools to solve problems. Standard commercial best practices and industry tools will be utilized for reliability analyses and assessments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline plus 2+ years of engineering experience OR Master’s degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline
  • Understanding of how to perform various reliability engineering related tasks such as reliability predictions, failure rate estimation, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Familiarity with understanding and interpreting electrical schematics/drawings, functional block diagrams, and ability to accurately create reliability block diagrams
  • Candidate must have active SCI access at time of application with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years and prior to start date OR Candidate must have an active U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance (or equivalent) at time of application with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years and prior to start date as well as the ability to obtain and maintain active SCI access within a reasonable period of time as determined by the company.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for all positions with a government clearance and certain other restricted positions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering
  • Understanding of technical principles, theories, subsystem design, and knowledge of general satellite design
  • Ability to combine hands-on Reliability Analysis and modeling skills for satellite, directed energy hardware, and systems
  • Familiarity with modeling/simulation software tools used for Reliability analysis
  • Experience in performing a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Experience in performing piece-part / component failure rate estimation using an industry handbook method
  • Advanced user in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance (or equivalent) clearance with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years along with active SCI access at time of application and prior to start

Responsibilities

  • Perform various reliability related tasks including: leading reliability support to the design team through the performance of design tradeoffs, reliability predictions/assessments, de-rating analysis assessment, allocation of reliability requirements, failure rate estimation/assessments, facilitation of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), facilitation of critical items identification and documentation of controls/mitigations, and providing support to design reviews and failure investigations.
  • Create reliability block diagrams/models that reflect the functions, failure modes, and characteristics of the system/unit being analyzed.
  • Work with engineering team to develop technical solutions to potential reliability and availability problems.
  • Adapt with probability and statistical tools/principles to recognize and solve problems involving non-standard configurations/definitions of system success.
  • Utilize standard commercial best practices and industry tools to cost-effectively conduct reliability analyses and assessments.
