About The Position

This course focuses on Legal Translation specialization. The instructor will be responsible for assessing needs and producing fit-for-purpose documents in this specialized and high-demand field. Key tasks include identifying, evaluating, and utilizing domain-specific resources for knowledge acquisition and text production, both with and without computer tools, and adapting texts for key groups within the legal domain. This course may be taken twice with different subject fields.

Requirements

  • Professional-level language skills in English (active) and French (passive).
  • Master’s degree in Translation or Translation Studies, membership in a recognized association or order of professional translators in the French to English language combination, and/or equivalent academic and professional experience.
  • Extensive professional experience as a French to English legal translator in a Canadian context.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver lectures and manage classroom activities and assessments mainly in English, occasionally in French.
  • Build and maintain a site for the course in the university’s learning management system.
  • Integrate relevant theoretical, conceptual and terminological content in the field of Law in Canada with instruction on translation.
  • Select source texts appropriate to the levels of students and course learning outcomes.
  • Provide detailed feedback and suggestions in translation-oriented exercises and assessments to help students develop translation and critical thinking skills.
  • Integrate discussions of and/or exercises with appropriate technological tools in the course content, with reference to selected technologies and resources provided by the School.
  • Coordinate with the Chair/Program Coordinator and colleagues to maintain program learning outcomes and coherence, while maintaining academic freedom.
