About The Position

The Faculty of Arts, Department of Philosophy at the University of Ottawa is seeking a Regular Part-Time Professor to teach PHI1101-E00, Reasoning and Critical Thinking, during the Fall 2026 semester. This course focuses on developing fundamental skills in reasoning and critical thinking through the study of argument types, logical structures, criteria for evaluating arguments, and forms of fallacious reasoning. The course is taught in English and is scheduled for Tuesdays from 11:30 AM to 12:50 PM and Fridays from 1:00 PM to 2:20 PM. The expected enrollment is 200 students, and the course is worth 3 credits. The hourly rate for teaching is $239.47 (2024-2025 rates), which does not include vacation or statutory pay and will be applied until a new collective agreement is ratified, with retroactivity paid after ratification. The academic year runs from September 1 to August 31. This is an in-person teaching position.

Requirements

  • Ph.D in Philosophy.
  • Experience in teaching at the university level in Philosophy.
  • Competence in English (language of instruction).
  • Ability to complete all mandatory legislated training.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the syllabus is approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Philosophy.
  • Utilize the mandatory textbook: “Principles of Reasoning: And Introduction to Critical Thinking" by Paul Rusnock.
  • Conduct in-person classes according to the specified schedule.
  • Complete all mandatory legislated training as required by provincial law.
