About The Position

The Town of Cohasset is seeking a qualified, motivated Registered Sanitarian to perform a variety of public health inspection and enforcement duties under the direction of the Public Health Director. This part-time position is responsible for conducting inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities to ensure compliance with state and local public health regulations. The successful candidate will exercise sound professional judgment while providing education and guidance to residents, business owners, and contractors.

Requirements

  • Registered Sanitarian (RS/REHS) certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts State Sanitary Code, Title 5 regulations, and applicable public health laws.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic inspection/reporting software.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License and reliable transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Massachusetts Soil Evaluator certification
  • Previous municipal public health inspection experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine, follow-up, complaint, and pre-operational inspections of all food establishments, trucks, farmers markets, residential and commercial kitchens in accordance with the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code (105 CMR 590.000).
  • Document inspection findings and issue corrective actions as necessary.
  • Investigate foodborne illness complaints and respond to consumer concerns.
  • Provide technical assistance and education to food operators regarding regulatory compliance.
  • Perform inspections of residential properties for compliance with the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code (105 CMR 410.000).
  • Investigate complaints related to housing conditions, nuisance issues, and public health concerns.
  • Prepare inspection reports, orders to correct violations, and follow-up documentation.
  • Coordinate with property owners, tenants, and other municipal departments regarding corrective actions.
  • Conduct inspections of public and semi-public swimming pools, spas, and recreational bathing facilities.
  • Verify compliance with applicable state regulations.
  • Review operational records, water chemistry, safety equipment, and maintenance practices.
  • Issue permits and conduct seasonal opening inspections as assigned.
  • Review septic system inspection reports and related documentation.
  • Conduct site inspections associated with septic system installations, repairs, upgrades, and property transfers.
  • Ensure compliance with Massachusetts Title 5 regulations (310 CMR 15.000).
  • Coordinate with engineers, installers, homeowners, and state agencies as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records utilizing electronic permitting and inspection software.
  • Prepare written reports, correspondence, and enforcement documents.
  • Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and emergency public health situations.
  • Attend meetings or hearings as required.
  • Assist with other environmental health programs and public health initiatives as assigned.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the position.
