This position focuses on providing essential nursing care to individuals with a wide range of medical needs. The work supports the health and safety of the inmate population while ensuring high quality clinical services. The PRN Nurse works an on-call intermittent basis in a State Correctional Institution.

Requirements

  • Active authorization to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania
  • If possessing an active temporary practice permit, must obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse within the one (1) year period defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing
  • Proof of possession of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Registered Nurse license at the time of appointment
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA
  • Ability to perform essential job functions
  • Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements
  • Information to support eligibility must be provided on the application (i.e., relevant, detailed experience/education)
  • If claiming education, must attach a copy of college transcripts

Responsibilities

  • Deliver vital sign checks, medication administration, treatments, and restorative techniques
  • Assist inmates with daily living activities and provide health education and counseling
  • Perform assessments and administer first aid, CPR, or AED during urgent situations
  • Maintain accurate electronic health records and prepare reports for transfers or releases
  • Share shift updates and communicate key information to staff and supervisors
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies
