About The Position

This is a part-time Registered Nurse position at Lawrenceville Correctional Center, offering a flexible staffing arrangement for nurses seeking additional hours, with an average of no more than 29 hours per week. The role involves providing nursing care within adult institutions using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating. Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care. All pertinent information must be documented in the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments as needed. Registered Nurses are expected to delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned, and be available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs. The position emphasizes providing evidence-based nursing care and promoting continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing program
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-RN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
  • Experience working with mental health patients
  • Experience in acute care and/or community health settings

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
  • Utilize a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
  • Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality.
  • Interface with other departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
  • Provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
