About The Position

This is a part-time Registered Nurse position within adult correctional institutions. The role involves utilizing the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide patient care according to established standards of practice. Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care. The nurse will document patient information in health records, maintain confidentiality, and interface with other departments as needed. This position requires the ability to delegate tasks and work assigned hours, days, and locations, with flexibility to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional demands. The role emphasizes evidence-based nursing care and continued competence through education and certification, with a focus on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application)
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
  • Deliver a multitude of services including 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
  • Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality.
  • Interface with other departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
  • Provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
