The Registered Nurse works in the Dialysis Unit, which serves inpatients requiring hemodialysis, therapeutic plasma exchange, or plasmapheresis during their hospital admission. Care may be provided within the department or in critical care areas. Dialysis services are available as needed 24/7. The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing practice centered on the whole patient and on creating a caring environment focused on healing and wellness. Practice honors each patient’s mind, body, and spirit, and is based on evidence and current research, hospital and department policies and procedures, regulatory standards, and professional guidelines. Clinical decisions incorporate all four phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. The clinical nurse spends the majority of their time (more than 50%) coordinating, ensuring, and providing direct patient care on the unit. The role includes nursing rounds, assessments and treatments; supporting admissions, transfers and discharges; patient- and family-centered education; care coordination; and individualized treatment planning as applicable.
