The Registered Nurse (RN) works on the 10-bed secured Complex Intervention Unit, a medical/surgical unit for adult patients with multiple comorbidities and increased risk of harming themselves or others or engaging in verbal or physical aggression. Nurses are specially educated to care for and teach patients with complex medical/surgical and behavioral health needs. The unit emphasizes early intervention and a holistic nursing approach. Staff may have a future opportunity to join the Department of Nursing’s behavioral emergency response team. The RN coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. Working within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, the RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of care for assigned patients. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality improvement; delegates care based on factors including skill, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources; and may participate in committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive a personal vehicle as part of the role. New graduate nurses are directed to apply through Mayo Clinic’s Nurse Residency Program. The position is eligible for TN sponsorship, subject to state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
