The Registered Nurse works in the Behavioral Health Crisis ER at Samaritan Hospital, a six-bed locked unit within the emergency department. The unit evaluates patients experiencing mental health crises to determine whether they need admission to an inpatient Behavioral Health unit or can safely return to the community with outpatient support. Patients may arrive through the main emergency department or be brought directly to Crisis by police or ambulance. The unit serves patients from adolescence through geriatrics. The Behavioral Health service treats people experiencing severe psychiatric crises who need inpatient care for safety, treatment, and stabilization. Care emphasizes safety, medication stabilization, and individualized coping skills. The nurse supports a primary unit and is cross-trained in all four Behavioral Health units: Adult Psych, Senior/Geriatric Psych, MICA, and Crisis ER. The RN assesses each patient's needs; plans, delivers, and evaluates nursing care addressing spiritual, emotional, and physiological needs; and ensures the care plan is carried out through personal performance or leadership of supervised personnel. The RN modifies care to meet patients' age, growth, and developmental needs and is directly accountable to the Nurse Manager for the quality of care delivered. When serving in the charge role, the RN also performs clinical and leadership functions.
