The Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) Registered Nurse is a clinically competent, licensed professional with expertise in perioperative nursing care. The role delivers comprehensive, patient-centered care to surgical patients during the pre-anesthesia phase and ensures they are optimally prepared for procedures. The PAT RN uses the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to coordinate and provide safe, effective perioperative care. Through preoperative evaluations, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the nurse identifies potential risks, supports clinical decision-making, and promotes positive surgical outcomes. The nurse also serves as a clinical resource, applying knowledge of perioperative standards, anesthesia requirements, and patient safety practices to support continuity of care throughout the surgical experience.
