About The Position

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a level one trauma center, is seeking a Registered Nurse for our Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit. This is a full-time position with rotating shifts. The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas. The unit is a 16-bed unit and is the only Sentara Facility that performs Kidney/Pancreas Transplants and complex vascular surgeries. It handles immediate surgical recovery of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant, general surgical patients requiring ICU, management of patients requiring mechanical ventilation, and management of patients requiring CRRT and hemo-dialysis. Vascular surgeries include lower extremity revascularization, Abdominal Aortic Aneurism, Mesenteric Artery Repair, EVAR, TEVAR, Lower extremity bypass, revascularization, Carotid Endarectomy and Carotid Stent, EKOS- treatment for DVTs, and medical management of AAA’s and dissections. The general patient population served includes adult medical and surgical patients requiring intensive nursing care. The average length of stay is 2-3 days, though complex patients may stay longer than 30 days.

Requirements

• Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
• Registered nursing License (Required)
• BLS required within 90 days of hire
• Minimum of 1 year emergency, intermediate care, intensive care or med/surg nursing

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor of Science Nursing- BSN or MSN (Preferred)
• Students in the process of completing an accredited nursing program.
• Students in the process of obtaining a Registered Nursing License.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care for patients requiring intensive nursing care, including those requiring mechanical ventilation, CRRT, and hemo-dialysis.
• Manage immediate surgical recovery of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant patients.
• Care for general surgical patients requiring ICU.
• Provide care for patients undergoing complex vascular surgeries.
