About The Position

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a level one trauma center, is seeking a Registered Nurse for our Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit. The Registered Nursing (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence- based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas. This is a 16-bed unit. Norfolk General Hospital is the only Sentara Facility that performs Kidney/Pancreas Transplants and complex vascular surgeries. The unit provides immediate surgical recovery of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant, general surgical patients requiring ICU, management of patients requiring mechanical ventilation, management of patients requiring CRRT and hemo-dialysis. Vascular procedures include lower extremity revascularization, Abdominal Aortic Aneurism, Mesenteric Artery Repair, EVAR, TEVAR, Lower extremity bypass, revascularization, Carotid Endarectomy and Carotid Stent, EKOS- treatment for DVTs, Medical management of AAA’s and dissections. The patient population served includes adult medical and surgical patients requiring intensive nursing care. The average length of stay is 2-3 days, though complex patients may be there for over 30 days.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
  • Registered nursing License (Required)
  • Students in the process of obtaining a Registered Nursing License.
  • Minimum of 1 year emergency, intermediate care, intensive care or med/surg nursing
  • BLS required within 90 days of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science Nursing- BSN or MSN (Preferred)
  • Students in the process of completing an accredited nursing program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process.
  • Utilize the standards of practice including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and coordination of care, teaching, health promotion, and evaluation.
  • Adhere to the standards of professional performance including ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice/nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health.
  • Provide nursing care to adult medical and surgical patients requiring intensive care.
  • Manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation.
  • Manage patients requiring CRRT and hemo-dialysis.
  • Provide immediate surgical recovery for Kidney and Pancreas Transplant patients.
  • Care for general surgical patients requiring ICU.
  • Care for vascular surgery patients.
