About The Position

The Registered Nurse provides nursing care at Fillmore County Jail in Preston, Minnesota. The role involves assessing, planning, and delivering patient care; coordinating with practitioners and other medical services; and supporting health care delivery in a correctional facility. The position is part-time, 8 hours per week, with negligible travel and any-shift scheduling. The nurse may be asked to cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities, back up the H.S.A./Site Manager, and train new hires and coworkers. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

Active nursing license in good standing in the state where services are provided.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with hands-on training.
Excellent documentation skills.
Knowledge of the RN scope of practice.

Responsibilities

Timely and accurately assess, plan, and deliver nursing care to patients.
Contact practitioners to obtain orders.
Administer prescribed medication, treatments, and other tasks as ordered by the practitioner.
Provide emergency first aid care when appropriate.
Check and record vital signs, peak flows, blood glucose checks, weight, and other on-site diagnostic tests when appropriate.
Triage officer intake screenings for necessity and priority at sick call.
Collect and record data for statistical reporting on the CQI.
Record information in chronic clinic and outcome study documents as indicated.
Report reactions to treatments and medications, and changes in patients’ emotional or physical condition.
Provide patient education on topics such as correctional facility policies and discharge planning.
Record care information concisely, accurately, completely, and in a timely manner using the appropriate format and forms.
Collaborate and coordinate multiple medical services for diagnosis and treatment as directed by the practitioner.
Maintain aseptic techniques and infection control precautions as required.
Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reaction and overdose.
Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition.
Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to the correctional institutional setting.
Recommend improved procedures, equipment, and supplies to the supervisor.
Notify the supervisor of medical or security incidents.
Present or participate in in-service education sessions.
Perform duties within the scope of practice mandated by state and local standards.
Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA practices as required by government agencies.
Oversee and delegate duties as expected and allowed under the RN scope of practice.
May cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities.
May act as a back-up to the H.S.A./Site Manager.
May train new hires and coworkers.
Perform other duties as assigned.
