About The Position

The Registered Nurse provides nursing care at the Wilson County Detention Center in Wilson, North Carolina. The role includes assessing, planning, and delivering care; carrying out practitioner orders; responding to emergencies; documenting patient information; coordinating services; and supporting patient education. The RN works within applicable state and local scope-of-practice standards, maintains confidentiality and infection-control practices, and may support other correctional facilities or help train coworkers.

Requirements

Active nursing license in good standing in the state where services are provided.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with hands-on training.
Excellent documentation skills.
Knowledge of the RN scope of practice.

Responsibilities

Timely and accurately assess, plan, and deliver nursing care to patients.
Contact practitioners to obtain orders.
Administer prescribed medications and treatments and perform other tasks as ordered by the practitioner.
Provide emergency first aid care when appropriate.
Check and record vital signs, peak flows, blood glucose, weight, and other on-site diagnostic tests when appropriate.
Triage officer intake screenings for necessity and priority at sick call.
Collect and record data for statistical reporting on CQI.
Record information in chronic clinic and outcome study documents as indicated.
Report reactions to treatments and medications, and changes in patients’ emotional or physical condition.
Provide patient education on topics such as correctional facility policies and discharge planning.
Record care information concisely, accurately, completely, and on time using the appropriate formats and forms.
Collaborate and coordinate multiple medical services for diagnosis and treatment as directed by the practitioner.
Maintain aseptic techniques and infection-control precautions as required.
Maintain working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions and overdose.
Maintain working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition.
Maintain working knowledge of social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to the correctional institutional setting.
Recommend improved procedures, equipment, and supplies to a supervisor.
Notify a supervisor of medical or security incidents.
Present or participate in in-service education sessions.
Perform duties within the scope of practice mandated by state and local standards.
Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA practices as required by government agencies.
Oversee and delegate duties as expected and allowed under the RN scope of practice.
Cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities when directed.
Act as a backup to the H.S.A./Site Manager when asked.
Train new hires and coworkers when asked.
Perform other duties as assigned.
