The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Care Center practices independently in the same or a similar clinical setting, demonstrates awareness of relevant aspects of a situation, and provides routine and complex care. The nurse works toward long-range goals or plans, continues developing the ability to manage clinical contingencies, and makes appropriate assignments and delegates to other care providers to help manage the clinical situation. The nurse provides care consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The role addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families according to the nurse’s level of practice. The nurse administers medications and treatments using appropriate protocols, monitors for side effects and treatment effectiveness, documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care, and assesses learning needs while educating patients, families, and caregivers and identifying issues and resources. Newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within their first 30 days. New hires receive precepting from a designated trained staff member, and onboarding requirements are validated through organizational entry competency validation and Emergency Department-specific competency validation. Newly licensed RNs may participate in a residency program or other specific orientation. Skills and competencies are completed with a preceptor at the bedside and documented in the program’s tracking software. Annual competency verification requirements must be completed.
