About The Position

This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to K-12 students to ensure they are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. The Registered Nurse will assess student health needs, collaborate with parents and healthcare providers, develop individual health care plans, and work with school staff to integrate medical needs into the classroom environment. The position also requires adherence to privacy laws, state nursing acts, and departmental guidelines, as well as managing clinic supplies, conducting health screenings, and providing health education.

Requirements

  • Associate degree from an accredited School of Nursing
  • One (1) year experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Registered Nurse valid to practice in the state of Indiana
  • Basic Life Support- Provider (American Heart Association)

  • BSN
  • One (1) year previous school nurse experience, public health nursing, community health nursing or pediatric nursing
  • One (1) year inpatient nursing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Review student's medical history and using nursing assessment evaluate impact on keeping the student healthy, safe and ready to learn.
  • Gather student specific health information, health care provider recommendations, orders, and/or emergency action plans.
  • Consult with parents and providers and identify nursing diagnoses, goals, interventions and measurable outcomes to provide best educational outcome.
  • Create an individual health care plan.
  • Collaborate with manager, school administration and school staff to identify ways to ensure medical needs are addressed in the classroom.
  • Provide training to keep the student safe while attending school.
  • Follow the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) school privacy and confidentiality laws or practices.
  • Follow Indiana Nurses Practice Act, Indiana Department of Education School Nurse Guidelines for Delegation, Indiana Code for schools and school district policies.
  • Gather, review, record and report immunization records status for all students according to the Indiana Department of Health school required immunizations law.
  • Use good standards of practice to assess and provide care/ first aid for illness and injuries.
  • Provide appropriate care and referrals to additional medical services as necessary.
  • Assess and document patient conditions according to the specifications of the written nursing policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to infection prevention protocols and promote and assist in the control and spread of communicable diseases at school.
  • Perform all Quality Assurance functions and procedures necessary to meet and maintain regulatory requirements.
  • Procure and maintain a well-stocked clinic.
  • Screen or participate as needed in health screenings.
  • Identify any abnormal health findings and initiate referrals to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow-through.
  • Provide ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies.
  • Deliver health education and anticipatory guidance in the clinic and classroom as needed and serve as a resource for school personnel.
