About The Position

The Unit Manager provides direct supervision, leadership, and monitoring of the clinical care delivered to residents on a daily basis. This role ensures that all resident care meets professional standards and regulatory requirements while strictly aligning with facility policies. The Nursing Supervisor acts as a guide for nursing staff, interacts effectively with residents, families, and visitors, and serves as the Person-in-Charge during off-hour emergencies.

Requirements

• Must have a valid and current LPN or RN state license.
• Demonstrated leadership ability.
• Requires a two-year degree
• Three years Management Experience
• Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Previous experience as long-term care charge nurse supervising unit nursing staff.
• Required to be on the on-call rotation.

Responsibilities

• Check facility staffing upon arrival and make necessary adjustments to ensure adequate coverage across all units.
• Manage staff call-outs (documenting times and reasons) and actively contact personnel to secure replacements.
• Collaborate with the Staffing Coordinator to prepare time and work schedules.
• Conduct thorough rounds on all units throughout the shift to ensure assignments are clearly communicated and completed.
• Communicate special care needs to Nursing Assistants and spot-check duties for completion.
• Monitor, counsel, guide, and evaluate the performance of direct care nurses and nursing assistants.
• Participate in new staff orientation, and investigate/document any incidents involving residents, staff, or visitors.
• Conduct shift-start rounds with the Charge Nurse to evaluate resident status, log updates in the Supervisor’s Logbook, and provide comprehensive oral reports to oncoming shift supervisors.
• Evaluate new admissions on the day of arrival, review hospital discharge/referral records, verify orders with the physician, perform assessments, and initiate care plans.
• Assess all residents transferring to the hospital prior to departure from the facility.
• Monitor meal services to ensure therapeutic diets are accurately served and residents receive proper assistance.
• Provide in-service training for resident care issues, respond to medical emergencies, and hold periodic resident care conferences.
• Ensure staff use proper body mechanics during transfers, demonstrating proper lifts when necessary.
• Periodically review clinical/nursing records and physician orders, and distribute stock medications to the units.
• Immediately notify the DON or Administrator of any serious changes or sudden demise of a resident.
• Perform random monthly audits of Physician Order Sheets and verify that Nursing flowsheets are completed properly before the end of each shift.
• Monitor the facility weight-monitoring program and ensure proper interventions are executed in response to changing trends.
• Recommend areas for closer clinical monitoring to the DON.
• Perform all duties in accordance with the values and mission of Maristhill, including the Standards of Conduct within the Organizational Integrity Program.
• Investigate incidents and complete detailed Accident/Incident reports in compliance with facility standards.
• Ensure timely implementation of fall action plans and demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of emergency protocols.
• Identify potential hazards, report unsafe conditions, and monitor medical equipment for safety, requesting repairs as needed.
• Utilize and dispose of sharps strictly according to CDC, OSHA, and facility guidelines.
• Conduct regular facility rounds (including the kitchen and exterior doors) to maintain building safety and security.
• Act as the Person-in-Charge during off-hours emergencies, directing staff via the facility's Emergency Manual.
• Apply infection and exposure control knowledge to all aspects of resident care to prevent disease transmission.
• Adhere strictly to handwashing, universal precautions, and bloodborne pathogen guidelines, utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.
• Report any exposures immediately following OSHA and facility procedures.
• Treat all residents with dignity and respect, ensuring total privacy and strict confidentiality.
• Support each resident’s independence and personal choices to accommodate their needs.
• Maintain an environment free from abuse, mistreatment, and neglect; immediately report any violations to appropriate leadership.
• Encourage residents to participate in activities and ensure the security of their personal possessions.
• Serve as a positive, courteous, and professional representative of the nursing facility at all times.
• Consistently respond to and resolve the needs and concerns of residents, families, staff, and visitors in a diplomatic fashion.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and Administrator.
