About The Position

WellSpan's Intraprocedural Skills Execution (WISE) program provides formal learning opportunities to all perioperative Novice Nurse hires at WellSpan. The program’s goal is to assist in decreasing the theory-practice gap by providing foundational learning, increasing confidence, knowledge, and competence; while improving professional interdisciplinary communication; and nurse retention rates in the perioperative environment at WellSpan. The unit provides a wide variety of surgical specialties including orthopedics, general, vascular, neurosurgery, ENT, plastics, OB/GYN, urology and Robotics. The unit is also responsible for urgent/emergent cases and cesarean sections 24 hours a day, seven days a week. RN orientation includes a comprehensive Relias program. Advanced robotic surgery (Da Vinci Xi ). The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for implementing, directing and coordinating the care of patients through the use of the nursing process: assessment, planning implementation and evaluation. Included is recognition and treatment of the physical and psychosocial changes unique to the age/population group served on the specific unit.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required
Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.
Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania.
CPR certification required.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
Evidence of participation in educational programs to update and maintain current knowledge and clinical skills.
Previous nursing experience in specialty area preferred.
Certification in specialty preferred.
CNOR preferred for OR.

Responds to delays in a calm manner. Apologizes for inconveniences and gives alternatives.
Analyzes assessment data, identifies priority problems and documents on Plan of Care in PCS for patients and families and significant others.
Uses effective problem-solving skills to plan patient care.
Identifies critical factors evidencing changes in patient condition and responds appropriately.
Completes and documents discharge assessment against plan of care goals.
Initiates and maintains Intravenous Therapy according to IV standards.
Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
Utilizes proper body mechanics to prevent injury to self and others. Safely positions, transfers and transports patients.
Functions as a virtual nurse as assigned which includes, but is not limited to, admissions, discharges, education, documentation through a virtual platform and working collaboratively with the bedside nursing staff.
Identifies the patient prior to admission to the OR, assesses and identifies operative site.
Assesses the H&P and Anesthesia Assessment forms for information which will require adjustment to the standard protocol such as obesity, deafness, diabetes, etc.
Completes continuous patient assessment during surgery, reporting abnormalities to the surgeon or Anesthesiology personnel immediately.
Reports all pertinent intraoperative information to PACU personnel.
Plans for appropriate and proper functioning of equipment and supplies based on the individual surgery and physician's preference, assisting with radiological procedures and equipment needs of the surgeon which includes but is not limited to stepping on the pedal.
Obtains and maintains equipment needed to implement standards of care.
Maintains proper position and draping of the patient in accord with physician protocols to prevent patient exposure, and damage to muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.
Prepares skin according to physician protocols in order to prevent infection and skin damage.
Creates and maintains a sterile field according to policy and procedure in order to prevent infection.
Obtains and accounts for needles, sponges, sutures, instruments, and other supplies following established policies as evidenced by proper documentation on OR Count Sheet, Implant Records, and count board.
Correctly handles surgical specimens per policy and procedure.
Prepares the patient for transfer to PACU under the direction of the surgeon and Anesthesia personnel.
Completes the Unit-based Electrosurgical Unit Competency.
Completes the Unit-based Procedural Counts Competency.
Completes the Unit-based Orthopat-Zimmer Competency.
Documents appropriately and accurately in the ORM portion of Meditech.
Maintains appropriate safety measures in surgical areas, i.e., strict compliance with all surgical initiatives including but not limited to all steps of Universal Protocol process, parallel processing, sharps safety, no pass zone, PPE protection in the surgical areas, medication labeling and specimen handling.
Is cognizant and monitors SCIPS information as it pertains to their practice and hospital protocols.
Achieves accurate SBAR hand off communication between levels of care.
Prepares the operating room for cases by setting up table, instruments and supplies according to the type of cases.
Prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Monitors and restocks supplies.
Drapes patients for surgical procedures.
Assists the surgical team during operative procedures.
Assist in the maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures, and sponges.
Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic techniques.
Assists surgeons during operations by retracting tissues under direction.
Identifies and cares for specimen.
