About The Position

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care based on standards of care and professional nursing practice and is accountable for the outcomes of that care. In the PACU, the nurse monitors post-operative patients recovering from anesthesia, manages symptoms, coordinates care with the medical team, and supports patients and families. This job description outlines representative duties and responsibilities; employees may be directed to perform other tasks.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Critical care experience.
• Work with patients, families, physicians, and other health care providers.
• Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire and recertified every two years.
• Registered Nurse licensure with the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and South Carolina Board of Nursing.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN).
• Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN).
• Previous PACU/OPS experience.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

• Monitor post-operative patients’ levels of consciousness during recovery from anesthesia.
• Measure and record patients’ vital signs.
• Observe patients for signs of side effects from anesthesia medication.
• Treat pain, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms of anesthesia.
• Update charts, patient files, and medical records.
• Collaborate with the medical team on post-operative patient care and facilitate timely specialized interventions.
• Provide comfort and reassurance to distressed post-operative patients and concerned family members.
• Educate patients and families on post-surgery care and answer their questions.
• Provide nursing care according to standards of care and professional nursing practice, and remain accountable for care outcomes.
