About The Position

The Pre/Post-Operative Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the patient’s admission to the facility, comprehensive pre-operative care, immediate post-operative care, and stabilization for admission to the inpatient department or return to the home environment.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year college or university, or diploma in nursing.
  • Possession of valid state license as Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • Minimum of one-year experience in Preop, PACU, Emergency, or ICU.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN desired.
  • One-year perioperative experience in surgery center or hospital setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct and indirect patient care.
  • Act under established protocols, policies, and provider orders.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Oversee patient's pre-operative and/or postoperative care, considering both physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Continually perform thorough and accurate patient assessment, anticipate needs, and report relevant assessments to the appropriate provider.
  • Oversee completion and availability of requested preoperative testing and report abnormal results to appropriate provider.
  • Document assessments and care in the medical record accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide patient and family education on perioperative procedures and expectations.
  • Ensure patients have met all necessary requirements (i.e. testing, consent forms, assessments, etc.) prior to transferring them to the operating room.
  • Ensure patients are optimized for discharge or transfer to inpatient unit; provide holistic and thorough discharge education and/or report.
  • Demonstrate continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for patients in the perioperative setting based on individualized needs.
  • Demonstrate good nursing knowledge base and rationale for actions; demonstrate appropriate knowledge and competence of skills identified for the position including, but not limited to: Initiation and maintenance of vascular access, Procedural sedation, Cardiac and vital sign monitoring, Assistance with peripheral nerve blocks, Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, Medication reconciliation, Airway management, Medication administration, Repositioning/comfort measures, Specimen Handling.
  • Always maintain cleanliness and order of the department.
  • Demonstrate the safe operation of equipment and follow procedures for reporting and correcting damaged equipment and/or unsafe situations.
  • Utilize supplies safely, effectively, and efficiently, assisting with stocking, replenishing, and preparation of supplies.
  • Keep the safety of patient, self, and others a primary concern always; recognize emergency situations and respond quickly and efficiently following hospital policies and procedures to prevent adverse outcomes.
  • Supervise and direct, as delegated, the activities of non-professional personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • Report for work in a timely manner and maintain a good attendance record.
  • Show flexibility in accommodating schedule changes, i.e. working late or early, changing schedules, etc.
  • Participate as a team member in planning and implementation of patient care; take responsibility for an adequate patient load, review schedule for the next day.
  • Respond to call backs in a timely and professional manner.
  • Utilize work time effectively.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work cohesively with other team members.
  • Monitor surgery schedule continually, communicating arrivals, cancellations, delays; communicate with reception desk, contact patients or surgeons who are late.
  • Report pertinent information to supervisor.
  • Contribute to increased morale and positive attitude in the department and facility.
  • Demonstrate the ability to accept and work through change.
  • Require minimal supervision in daily tasks.
  • Participate in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.
  • Make post-operative phone calls, assessing patient status and reporting any pertinent information to supervisor and/or anesthesiologist.
  • Utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills, making suggestions for improvement.
  • Perform and document daily assignments, including general housekeeping and maintenance of the work environment.
  • Develop communication skills and promote inter-departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care.
  • Actively participate in patient and employee safety by following OSHA and other standards reviewed in annual education.
  • Maintain current BLS and ACLS certification and any other advanced certifications required.
