About The Position

The Perioperative 101 Nursing Program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for a nursing career in the operating room. This program provides high-quality didactic and clinical experiences to help you become a well-rounded, fully competent circulating perioperative registered nurse with foundational scrub skills. The Perioperative RN coordinates the surgical team in all aspects of OR activities, provides optimum perioperative nursing care, and functions as the patient's advocate. Upon acceptance into the program, candidates will be paid an RN OR hourly rate and are benefit-eligible from day 1. Graduates will be awarded contact hours from AORN and be eligible to take the Perioperative Certification exam after two years of experience. The RN in the Operating Room circulates, scrubs, and coordinates the surgical team in all aspects of OR activities, providing optimum perioperative nursing care to patients. Our state-of-the-art hospital in Jacksonville includes 34 operating rooms with advanced technologies.

Requirements

All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing with a RN start date after April 1, 2020, must provide documented evidence of program completion of their baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start date.
Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
Experience working in a team environment.
Computer skills required.
Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
Current RN license by applicable state requirements. (RN license required 1-week prior to start date, but not required to begin the application process)
Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement.
A 30-month commitment to Mayo Clinic is requested if an offer is accepted for this training program.

Nice To Haves

BSN preferred but not required.
One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is preferred.
Prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.

Responsibilities

The RN is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care.
The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family.
The RN will function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources.
The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.
Circulates, scrubs and coordinates the surgical team in all aspects of OR activities, providing for optimum perioperative nursing care to patients.
Clinical competency to include, but not limited to, guidelines and standards of care, policies and procedures; patient and staff safety policy and procedures; technical preparation, operation and care of equipment.
Understands team concept in working with others.
Possesses ability to prioritize in dealing with the needs of the surgical team during a case.
Ability to function under stress and pressure.
Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency through American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
