About The Position

St. Vincent’s Medical Center, part of the Hartford HealthCare network, is seeking novice operating room nurses for their OR Transition to Practice Program. This 12-month program is designed to equip new graduate registered nurses and experienced nurses with non-OR experience with the necessary competencies to provide high-quality, safe patient care in the operating room. The program includes a blended and multimodal approach with evidence-based learning modules (AORN Periop 101), classroom/group learning, simulation, and clinical experiences. The first three months focus on foundational perioperative nursing competencies and the scrub nurse role, culminating in a Periop 101 final exam. The subsequent nine months involve clinical orientation in the circulating nurse role across various surgical specialties, with additional components on professional practice, development, and governance. Learners will be supported by preceptors, management, and the Nursing Professional Development team. New graduates will also participate in the Hartford Healthcare Graduate Nurse Residency program.

Requirements

  • Current Connecticut nursing license required prior to start date.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire.
  • Complete online application.
  • Prepare a brief essay explaining your desire to begin your career in perioperative nursing.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to perioperative nursing practice environment preferred (Summer Student Nurse Fellow, Capstone Rotation, employment in perioperative services in a non-licensed capacity).

Responsibilities

  • Provide care before, during, and after surgery.
  • Work closely with the surgical team to deliver safe, high-quality care.
  • Ensure patient safety throughout the perioperative environment.
  • Prepare instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies within the sterile field (Scrub Nurse role).
  • Assist the surgical team by passing instruments during procedures (Scrub Nurse role).
  • Maintain a sterile environment (Scrub Nurse role).
  • Monitor instruments and supplies used during surgery to ensure nothing is misplaced (Scrub Nurse role).
  • Manage the overall environment of the operating room (Circulating Nurse role).
  • Ensure all surgical tools, supplies, and equipment are available and working (Circulating Nurse role).
  • Monitor the patient’s safety and well-being throughout the surgery (Circulating Nurse role).
  • Maintain documentation and records of the procedure (Circulating Nurse role).
  • Communicate between the surgical team and other departments (Circulating Nurse role).
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide additional instruments, medications, or equipment as necessary (Circulating Nurse role).
