Registered Nurse (RN) - PeriOp 101 - OR General Surgery
About The Position
St. Vincent’s Medical Center, part of the Hartford HealthCare network, is seeking novice operating room nurses for their OR Transition to Practice Program. This 12-month program is designed for new graduate registered nurses and experienced nurses new to the OR. It offers a blended and multimodal approach to ensure nurses master the necessary competencies for high-quality and safe patient care. The program includes evidence-based learning modules (AORN Periop 101), classroom/group learning, simulation, and clinical experiences. The first three months focus on foundational perioperative nurse competencies and the scrub nurse role, culminating in a Periop 101 final exam. The subsequent nine months are dedicated to clinical orientation, mastering the circulating nurse role across various surgical specialties, and professional development. The schedule during orientation is Monday-Friday, 6:30 am-3:00 pm, with exposure to evening, night, and weekend shifts in the final weeks. Learners will be supported by preceptors, management, and the Nursing Professional Development team. New graduates will also participate in the Hartford Healthcare Graduate Nurse Residency program.
Requirements
- Current Connecticut nursing license required prior to start date.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire.
- Complete online application.

Nice To Haves
- Exposure to perioperative nursing practice environment preferred (Summer Student Nurse Fellow, Capstone Rotation, employment in perioperative services in a non-licensed capacity).
Responsibilities
- Master foundational perioperative nurse competencies.
- Learn and master the scrub nurse role.

- Provide safe, high-quality care before, during, and after surgery.
- Work closely with the surgical team.
- Ensure patient safety throughout the perioperative environment.
- Prepare instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
- Maintain a sterile environment.
- Monitor instruments and supplies used during surgery.
- Manage the overall environment of the operating room.
- Ensure all surgical tools, supplies, and equipment are available and working.
- Monitor the patient’s safety and well-being throughout the surgery.
- Maintain documentation and records of the procedure.
- Communicate between the surgical team and other departments.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
- Provide additional instruments, medications, or equipment as necessary.
- Engage in innovation and continued learning with new equipment and procedures.
