12 James Surg Onc is a mixed acuity unit that cares for both PCU and Med Surg patients. This is a very busy surgical floor. All perm staff is PCU trained. Staffing Ratios - Goal is 1:4, but can be 1:5. Weekends are variable based on unit needs. No set/blocked scheduling is offered to permanent staff. All travelers may be required to float within their scope of practice. If you accept a 12D/N rotating contract, you may be scheduled for days, nights, or a combination of both, depending on the department’s needs. Shift assignments are reviewed every 4-week scheduling period, but changes are not guaranteed and are based on staffing priorities at that time. The patient age group includes Adults and Geriatrics. Patient diagnoses include Surgical Oncology (breast, thyroid, melanoma), Hepatobiliary (liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract cancers, neuroendocrine), Colorectal (colon, rectal cancer), and Plastics (reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma). Special procedures and unit details include Chemotherapy, Blood transfusions, IV Antibiotics, Oncologic emergencies, cytokine release syndrome, Insulin drips, Heparin drips, and a heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient falls. Computerized charting is done via EPIC.
