About The Position

This is an exciting, newly built unit that is often the first to pilot cutting-edge technologies that enhance patient care and support staff. Mayo Clinic uses feedback from this unit to determine if new technologies or processes will be scaled to additional units in the hospital and across the enterprise. We care for various patients who have orthopedic trauma, spine surgery, hand surgery, orthopedic cancer, and a small amount of total joint replacements. This innovative unit collaborates closely with world-renowned physicians and surgeons, providing crucial support for their complex surgeries. The unit has 24 beds and functions cohesively as a team to provide exceptional patient care. This care team has been recognized with the Service Excellence Award and nominated for the Excellence through Teamwork award. The unit is developing advanced deterioration detection & response, piloting cutting-edge technologies, integrating virtual support from the ICU, implementing automated continuous vital sign collection, pioneering documentation efficiencies, deploying new smartphones, and partnering with Virtual Registered Nurses (ViRN) to offset administrative tasks from the bedside RN.

Requirements

  • Registered nurse (RN) accountability for coordination of nursing care.
  • Accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Skillful in mentoring and teaching.
  • May participate on committees or projects.
  • A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.
  • State licensure.
  • Completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification (for TN sponsorship).

Responsibilities

  • Coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care.
  • Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family.
  • Function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provide leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources.
  • Postoperative monitoring.
  • Increasing or maintaining independence.
  • Preventing skin breakdown, infection, and falls.
  • Managing acute and chronic pain.
  • Patient education.
  • Individualized patient care.
  • Multidisciplinary team collaboration for acute care and discharge planning.
